Hours: Full-time, regular employee; 40 hours per week

Pay Range: $75,000 - $90,000 per year

About the role

The Senior Accountant supports IAEs mission-focused work by serving as the technical expert and project manager for accounting processes and procedures. Reporting to the Director of Finance, the Senior Accountant guides the development of accounting procedures, produces and analyzes financial reports, aids in grants and contract management and compliance tracking, and performs accounts receivable tasks and supports accounts payable tasks.

This is an exciting time to join IAE and our Finance Team. We have recently transitioned to Sage Intacct accounting software from QuickBooks Desktop and established a new fund structure with our board. This is an excellent opportunity to join an organization and help build new accounting policies and procedures from the ground up that takes advantage of our new platform and establishes a solid financial understand from which we can continue to strategically grow our organization.

Principal Job Functions

Technical leadership and project management

  • Under the guidance of the Director of Finance, in collaboration with the full accounting team, lead the development of accounting policies and procedures, including effective and efficient use of accounting software (Sage Intacct)
  • Serve as the teams technical expert for accounting software (Sage Intacct) functions and processes. Identify areas where processes could be enhanced to support tracking, reporting, and internal controls.
  • Develop and help implement finance team and IAE staff trainings related to accounting and project budgeting processes. Serve as a team mentor. Provide expertise to the team in GAAP and 2 CFR 200 interpretations.
  • Support the Director of Finance with the annual audit, NICRA, and organizational budget development.
  • Develop routine financial reporting and analyses.

Accounting tasks

  • Manage grant compliance; ensure processes and controls adhere to GAAP
  • Support program directors and other executive staff with establishing and tracking agreement and project-level budgets
  • Lead the monthly reconciliation of bank, credit card, investment and other accounts
  • Assist with the creation and submission of invoices, grant billing adjustments, tracking of payments, financial reports and forms and other accounts receivable items. Ensures appropriate backup documentation.
  • Provides backup support to accounts payable, payroll, and other similar tasks.

Other duties as assigned related to finance, accounting, and administration roles.

Qualifications

Essential Skills and Experience:

  • Bachelors degree in accounting, business or related field
  • 4 or more years of finance and accounting experience, preferably at a senior level
  • Expertise in GAAP-basis accounting and 2 CFR 200s
  • Experience working in a nonprofit organization; familiarity with nonprofit accounting requirements
  • Grant management, tracking, and reporting experience, especially with federal government grants and other grants, agreements and restricted funds
  • Experience working independently, analyzing and developing accounting processes, procedures and internal controls
  • Experience managing and coordinating several projects and tasks simultaneously
  • Excellent organizational and communication (written and oral) skills
  • Team-oriented; proven collaborator and problem-solver
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Proficiency with Sage Intacct or similar accounting platform; proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and Google Suite
  • Collaborative team member, positive attitude, and ability to work with a diverse staff
  • Ability to respect confidential information

Desired Skills and Experience:

  • Masters degree and public accounting experience
  • Experience in accounting platform migrations
  • Professional licenses or certifications related to the role

Physical Challenges:

  • Must be able to lift and/or move items weighing up to 20 pounds
  • Must be able to complete tasks in an occasionally noisy environment with frequent interruptions
  • Ability to remain in a stationary position, often sitting or standing for prolonged periods
